Hypothesis

The anterior pituitary production of N-terminal prolactin-derived fragments varies along the estrous cycle and is influenced by estrogens.

Conclusion

The study shows that the production of 16 kDa prolactin is higher during proestrus and is associated with increased apoptosis and decreased proliferation of anterior pituitary cells.

Supporting Evidence

  • N-terminal prolactin-derived fragments production was higher at proestrus compared to diestrus.
  • Estradiol increased the content and release of prolactin forms from anterior pituitary cells.
  • 16 kDa prolactin induced apoptosis of cultured anterior pituitary cells only in the presence of estradiol.
  • 16 kDa prolactin decreased forskolin-induced proliferation of anterior pituitary cells.

Takeaway

This study found that a specific form of prolactin can make pituitary cells die and stop growing, especially when hormones are high during certain times in the cycle.

Methodology

The study involved Western blot analysis, TUNEL assay, and flow cytometry to evaluate the effects of 16 kDa prolactin on anterior pituitary cells.
