Hypothesis

To compare the efficacy and safety of armodafinil with modafinil in patients of shift work sleep disorder.

Conclusion

Armodafinil was found to be safe and effective in the treatment of shift work sleep disorder, with no significant difference in efficacy compared to modafinil.

Supporting Evidence

  • Both modafinil and armodafinil significantly improved sleepiness mean grades as compared to baseline.
  • Responder rates with armodafinil (72.12%) and modafinil (74.29%) were comparable.
  • Adverse event incidences were comparable between both groups.

Takeaway

This study looked at two medications to help people who have trouble staying awake at night for work, and found that both work similarly well.

Methodology

A 12-week, randomized, double-blind, multicentric study comparing armodafinil (150 mg) and modafinil (200 mg) in patients with shift work sleep disorder.

Limitations

Assessment of sleep latency and polysomnography could not be done due to unavailability of patients and investigators.

Participant Demographics

Patients aged 18 to 60 years, both sexes, suffering from excessive sleepiness associated with shift work sleep disorder.
