Hypothesis

Is there an association between histological types of epithelial ovarian cancer and the risk of developing skin cancer?

Conclusion

Patients with epithelial ovarian cancer, especially those with endometrioid carcinoma, have an increased risk of developing skin cancer.

Supporting Evidence

  • Skin cancer was found in 2.7% of the 5366 individuals in the study.
  • The odds ratio for endometrioid cancer in the ovary to skin cancer in patients under 50 was 8.9.
  • The odds ratio decreased to 1.2 in patients older than 50.

Takeaway

If someone has ovarian cancer, they might also get skin cancer, especially if their ovarian cancer is of a specific type called endometrioid.

Methodology

A cross-sectional study using a large population-based dataset from the Dutch nationwide pathology database (PALGA).

Potential Biases

Potential bias due to increased surveillance of skin lesions in patients with ovarian cancer.

Limitations

The study may not account for all potential confounding factors related to skin cancer risk.

Participant Demographics

The study included 5366 patients diagnosed with malignant or borderline malignant epithelial ovarian cancer.
