Hypothesis

This study assesses the distribution of certified nursing assistants (CNA) and the community characteristics associated with CNA employment.

Conclusion

CNA employment is highly variable and is influenced more by health care and labor market factors than by population need.

Supporting Evidence

  • CNA employment is positively associated with the number of hospitals and nursing home beds.
  • Count locations have a higher total population compared to zero locations.
  • Zero locations are more likely to be rural and have fewer CNA training programs.

Takeaway

This study looks at where certified nursing assistants work in the U.S. and finds that where they are needed most doesn't always match where they are employed.

Methodology

A cross-sectional design using a negative binomial hurdle model to analyze data from various sources.

Limitations

The study may not account for all factors influencing CNA employment.
