Hypothesis

The study aims to evaluate the findings of the duplex scan in patients with clinical suspicion of deep venous thrombosis.

Conclusion

Deep venous and superficial venous thromboses were diagnosed in 49% of cases, and in 30.9% of cases, the duplex scan indicated other pathologies.

Supporting Evidence

  • The incidence of deep venous thrombosis is 0.6 cases per 1000 inhabitants.
  • The duplex scan has 100% sensitivity and 98% specificity for diagnosing symptomatic DVT.
  • Venous thrombosis was found in 117 patients, with 75 having deep venous thrombosis.

Takeaway

Doctors used a special scan to check if patients had blood clots in their legs, and they found that almost half of the patients had clots.

Methodology

239 consecutive symptomatic outpatients were evaluated by duplex scan, including demographic characteristics and risk factors.

Limitations

The study did not perform contrast venography after duplex scan, limiting the ability to calculate sensitivity and specificity.

Participant Demographics

Mean age 59.2 years, 164 females.
