Hypothesis
This study aims to identify RND genes in the B. cenocepacia genome and investigate their involvement in antimicrobial resistance.
Conclusion
The identified RND pumps suggest that active efflux could be a major mechanism underlying antimicrobial resistance in B. cenocepacia.
Supporting Evidence
- Genome analysis revealed 14 open reading frames encoding putative drug efflux pumps.
- RT-PCR analysis showed that some genes were expressed at detectable levels.
- Overexpression of orf2 in E. coli conferred resistance to several antibiotics.
Takeaway
Bacteria can resist antibiotics, and this study found genes in a specific bacteria that help it pump out drugs, making it harder to treat infections.
Methodology
Genome analysis and RT-PCR were used to identify and characterize RND efflux pump genes in B. cenocepacia.
Limitations
The study does not confirm the exact role of the identified pumps in antimicrobial resistance.
