Hypothesis

There is considerable confusion regarding the status and typification of several names within the Capsicum genus.

Conclusion

Fourteen lectotypes, synonyms, and a new name, Capsicum eshbaughii, are proposed to clarify the nomenclature of Capsicum.

Supporting Evidence

  • Capsicum has been part of the human diet since 6000–7500 BC.
  • Five domesticated species of Capsicum are cultivated for their economic value.
  • Capsicum fruits contain significant quantities of metabolites and pungent compounds.

Takeaway

This study helps to clear up confusion about the names of different Capsicum plants by officially naming and categorizing them.

Methodology

Lectotypes were designated for 14 names based on original collections and typification.

Limitations

Some type specimens were destroyed during World War II, and others exhibit uncertain locality data.
