Hypothesis

This systematic review investigates the relationship between changes in FEV1 and changes in health status with bronchodilator therapy in COPD patients.

Conclusion

Improvement in mean trough FEV1 is associated with proportional improvements in health status.

Supporting Evidence

  • Thirty-six studies were included in the review, with 22 studies providing SGRQ data.
  • Change in trough FEV1 and change in SGRQ total score were negatively correlated (r = -0.46).
  • A 100 mL increase in FEV1 was associated with a statistically significant reduction in SGRQ of 2.5.

Takeaway

If patients' lung function improves, they often feel better too. This study looked at how these two things are connected.

Methodology

A systematic review of RCTs was conducted, analyzing data from six databases to assess the relationship between FEV1 changes and health status as measured by the SGRQ.

Potential Biases

The analysis combined treatment arms from different studies, which may affect estimates of correlation.

Limitations

The review was limited by the quality and size of the available data set, and many studies did not report numerical data.

Participant Demographics

The average age of participants was 64 years, with 72% male.
