Hypothesis

The study investigates the relationship between the expression of p21WAF1/CIP1 protein and p53 status in hepatocellular carcinomas.

Conclusion

The study found that p21WAF1/CIP1 expression is significantly associated with p53 status in hepatocellular carcinomas, particularly in those related to hepatitis C virus.

Supporting Evidence

  • p21WAF1/CIP1 protein was absent from 72.8% of tumors examined.
  • Altered p53 expression was found in 53.1% of tumors.
  • 38 of 59 tumors lacking p21WAF1/CIP1 protein had altered p53 expression.
  • All tumors with intrahepatic metastasis showed altered expression of p21WAF1/CIP1 or p53.

Takeaway

In liver cancer, a protein called p21 is often missing when another protein called p53 is not working right, especially in cases linked to hepatitis C.

Methodology

The expression of p21WAF1/CIP1 and p53 was examined immunohistochemically in 81 tumors from 65 patients.

Participant Demographics

Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.
