Hypothesis
This study aimed to determine plasma levels of leptin and investigate its associations with body composition, malaria, haemolytic, sickling and inflammatory parameters in sickle cell anaemia patients.
Conclusion
Plasma levels of leptin are significantly lower in the unsteady state of sickle cell anaemia, correlating with inflammation and poor reticulocyte response.
Supporting Evidence
- Patients in an unsteady state had significantly lower plasma leptin levels compared to those in a steady state.
- Leptin levels correlated negatively with inflammatory markers such as ESR.
- Malaria parasitaemia was significantly higher in unsteady sickle cell patients.
Takeaway
This study found that sickle cell patients have lower leptin levels, especially when they are not feeling well, which might affect their health.
Methodology
The study analyzed blood samples from 55 sickle cell anaemia patients and 22 non-SCD controls, measuring plasma leptin levels and various haematological parameters.
Limitations
The study's reliance on ESR as a non-specific marker of inflammation may limit its prognostic value.
Participant Demographics
Patients aged 5-35 years, with 61.8% being females.
