Hypothesis
The addition of graphite micropowder will enhance tool life and surface quality during the machining of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy under minimum quantity lubrication conditions.
Conclusion
Adding 0.6 wt% of graphite micropowder to the cutting fluid significantly increased tool life and improved surface roughness during the machining of titanium alloy.
Supporting Evidence
- The addition of graphite micropowder extended tool life by 7% compared to machining without it and by 96% compared to dry machining.
- Mathematical models showed a decrease in cutting force components with the addition of graphite micropowder.
- Surface roughness parameters decreased significantly at higher cutting speeds with the addition of graphite micropowder.
Takeaway
This study shows that adding a little bit of graphite powder to the liquid used while cutting metal can help the tools last longer and make the metal smoother.
Methodology
The study involved finish turning of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy using a lathe with two different cutting fluids: one with and one without graphite micropowder.
Limitations
The study primarily focused on a specific concentration of graphite micropowder and may not account for other concentrations or types of additives.
