Hypothesis

The study aims to compare the immunohistochemical profiles of multicystic dysplastic kidneys with and without obstruction.

Conclusion

TGF-β and IGF2 function differently in obstructive and nonobstructive multicystic dysplastic kidneys, while PAX2, BCL-2, and β-catenin show no differences between the two types.

Supporting Evidence

  • TGF-β was negative in obstructive MCDKs and positive in nonobstructive MCDK.
  • IGF2 was overexpressed in obstructive and underexpressed in nonobstructive MCDKs.
  • PAX2, BCL-2, and β-catenin were expressed equally in both types of dysplasia.

Takeaway

This study looked at sick kidneys in babies to see how different proteins behave when the kidneys are blocked versus when they are not.

Methodology

The study involved immunohistochemical analysis of kidney samples from 17 cases of multicystic dysplastic kidneys, 17 controls, and 20 fetal kidneys.

Participant Demographics

The study included 17 cases of multicystic dysplastic kidneys, with 10 cases having obstruction and 7 without, along with age-matched controls and fetal kidneys.
