Hypothesis

We hypothesized that TNFα/GM-CSF-induced protein profiles can be found in peripheral neutrophils of COPD patients.

Conclusion

Neutrophils from COPD patients have a unique protein profile that does not reflect the protein profiles induced by TNFα or GM-CSF.

Supporting Evidence

  • 7 protein spots were significantly regulated between COPD patients and healthy controls.
  • In vitro stimulation with TNFα and GM-CSF resulted in 13 and 20 regulated protein spots, respectively.
  • The protein profiles of COPD patients did not correspond to those induced by TNFα or GM-CSF.

Takeaway

This study found that the proteins in the blood cells of COPD patients are different from those in healthy people, and the usual signals that cause inflammation don't explain these differences.

Methodology

Fluorescence 2-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis was used to analyze protein profiles in neutrophils from COPD patients and healthy controls.
