Hypothesis
Does the type of adjuvant influence the isotype and amount of antibodies produced upon immunization?
Conclusion
The study found that the type of adjuvant used does not significantly affect the isotype and amount of antibodies produced in response to TNP-KLH immunization.
Supporting Evidence
- Similar levels of IgG1, IgE, and IgG2a antibodies were found regardless of the adjuvant used.
- Administration of IFN- did not increase the amount of IgG produced.
- Repeated immunization with TNP-KLH increased serum total IgE levels.
Takeaway
When mice are given a vaccine, the type of helper cells they produce is more important than the type of booster used to help their immune system.
Methodology
Mice were immunized with TNP-KLH either adsorbed on alum or emulsified in CFA, and serum levels of IgE, IgG1, and IgG2a were measured using ELISA.
Limitations
The study primarily focused on two adjuvants and may not represent all possible adjuvant effects.
Participant Demographics
Female BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice, aged 12-16 weeks.
