Hypothesis
The study aims to determine the responses of normal human ovarian surface epithelium to androgens.
Conclusion
The ovarian surface epithelium is responsive to androgens, which can increase cell proliferation and decrease cell death.
Supporting Evidence
- 100% of cultures expressed mRNA encoding the androgen receptor.
- Mibolerone significantly stimulated DNA synthesis in 5 out of 9 cultures.
- Mibolerone caused a significant decrease in cell death in 2 out of 5 cultures tested.
Takeaway
This study shows that the cells on the surface of the ovaries can grow more when exposed to androgens, which are male hormones.
Methodology
Primary cultures of human ovarian surface epithelium were established from patients, and the effects of mibolerone, a synthetic androgen, on DNA synthesis and cell death were measured.
Limitations
The study primarily focuses on primary cultures and may not fully represent in vivo conditions.
Participant Demographics
Patients undergoing oophorectomy for benign disease.
