Hypothesis

The study aims to determine the prevalence of HBV genotypes and mutations in the precore and basal core promoter regions in HBV strains in Karachi.

Conclusion

Type D is the main HBV genotype in Karachi, and many patients have significant mutations in the PC and BCP regions.

Supporting Evidence

  • Genotype D was present in 100% of the patients.
  • 38% of HBeAg negative patients had no detectable mutations.
  • 24% of HBeAg positive patients had mutations in the PC and BCP regions.
  • 62% of HBeAg negative patients had mutations in the PC and BCP regions.

Takeaway

This study found that most people with hepatitis B in Karachi have a specific type of the virus and many have changes in their virus that could affect their health.

Methodology

The study enrolled 109 chronic hepatitis B patients and tested their sera for HBV genotypes and mutations using PCR and line-probe assays.

Potential Biases

The study may have bias due to the convenience sampling method used for patient selection.

Limitations

The study used convenience sampling, which may not represent the true prevalence of HBeAg negative disease.

Participant Demographics

The mean age of participants was 32.6 years, with 78% being male.
