Hypothesis

Is LigaSure haemorrhoidectomy a less painful and more effective alternative to conventional diathermy for IV-degree haemorrhoids?

Conclusion

LigaSure haemorrhoidectomy is more effective than conventional diathermy for IV-degree haemorrhoids, resulting in less postoperative pain and a quicker return to work.

Supporting Evidence

  • The mean operative time was significantly shorter in the LigaSure group.
  • Postoperative pain was lower in the LigaSure group on days three and four.
  • Patients treated with LigaSure returned to work significantly faster than those treated with conventional diathermy.

Takeaway

This study looked at two ways to treat really bad hemorrhoids. One way, called LigaSure, was found to hurt less and let people go back to work faster than the other way.

Methodology

52 patients with IV-degree haemorrhoids were randomly assigned to receive either LigaSure or conventional diathermy, and outcomes were evaluated over a minimum follow-up of twelve months.

Limitations

The sample size was small and the follow-up period was limited.

Participant Demographics

Patients aged 19-80, ASA I-II, both genders.
