Hypothesis
The study investigates the incidence trends of intestinal and diffuse types of gastric adenocarcinoma in relation to Helicobacter pylori infection.
Conclusion
Both major histologic types of gastric adenocarcinoma have declined significantly in Sweden, with no significant differences in trends between them.
Supporting Evidence
- The overall incidence of adenocarcinoma distal to the gastric cardia declined by 9% per year.
- Cardia cancer incidence remained stable despite concerns of an increase.
- The intestinal type of gastric adenocarcinoma predominated in high-risk areas.
- Diffuse tumours were more common among young patients and women.
Takeaway
The number of people getting stomach cancer is going down in Sweden, but the type of cancer that affects the cardia part of the stomach is not changing much.
Methodology
The study analyzed the incidence of gastric adenocarcinoma in a defined Swedish population from 1989 to 1994, classifying tumors histologically and topographically.
Participant Demographics
The study included a well-defined Swedish population of 1.3 million.
