Hypothesis
To describe the clinical presentation of suprasellar cysts (SSCs) and surgical indications, and compare the treatment methods of endoscopic ventriculocystostomy (VC) and ventriculocystocisternotomy (VCC).
Conclusion
Different age groups with SSCs have different main clinical presentations, and VCC appears to be more efficacious than VC.
Supporting Evidence
- The overall success rate of endoscopic fenestration was 90.4%.
- VCC had a higher success rate compared to VC.
- Symptoms of elevated ICP improved in 95.2% of patients after surgery.
- Endoscopic surgery is considered the first choice for managing SSCs with hydrocephalus.
Takeaway
Suprasellar cysts are fluid-filled sacs in the brain that can cause problems, especially in young children, and doctors found that a specific surgery works better than another.
Methodology
Retrospective review of 73 patients treated with either VC or VCC, assessing outcomes through clinical examination and MRI.
Limitations
Retrospective design and small number of patients in the youngest and oldest age groups.
Participant Demographics
39 males and 34 females, ages ranged from 6 months to 53 years.
