Hypothesis

IL-6 levels are elevated in patients with Behcet's disease compared to healthy controls and rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Conclusion

The study found that active Behcet's disease patients have significantly higher IL-6 levels in serum and synovial fluid compared to healthy controls and inactive patients.

Supporting Evidence

  • IL-6 levels in active Behcet's disease patients were significantly higher than in healthy controls.
  • IL-6 production by PBMC was significantly increased in active Behcet's disease patients compared to inactive patients.
  • IL-6 levels in synovial fluid were similar in active Behcet's disease and rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Takeaway

This study shows that people with active Behcet's disease have more of a substance called IL-6 in their blood, which might be linked to their illness.

Methodology

The study measured IL-6 levels in serum and synovial fluids from Behcet's disease patients, rheumatoid arthritis patients, and healthy controls, and assessed IL-6 production by PBMC and alveolar macrophages.

Limitations

The study did not explore the long-term effects of IL-6 levels or the impact of treatments on IL-6 production.

Participant Demographics

30 patients with Behcet's disease (28 men, 2 women) with a mean age of 34 years, compared to 10 rheumatoid arthritis patients and 20 healthy controls.
