HIV infection influences the natural history of hepatitis virus infections.

Conclusion

The study found that a significant percentage of HIV-positive patients were also infected with hepatitis B and C viruses.

Supporting Evidence

  • 16.7% of HIV seropositive patients were positive for Hepatitis B.
  • 1.3% of HIV seropositive patients were positive for Hepatitis C.
  • 0.4% of patients had concurrent infections of HIV, HBV, and HCV.

Takeaway

Many people with HIV also have hepatitis B or C, which can make their liver problems worse.

Methodology

Patients were tested for HIV antibodies and subsequently for Hepatitis B and C using ELISA.

Limitations

Screening for HBV and HCV in HIV patients is not regularly performed in resource-limited settings.

Participant Demographics

All 97 HIV seropositive coinfected patients were aged 25–35 years.
