Hypothesis
The study aimed to translate and validate the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) for use in the Korean ICU setting.
Conclusion
The Korean CAM-ICU showed good validity and could be incorporated into clinical practice in Korean ICUs.
Supporting Evidence
- 16 out of 22 patients developed delirium based on DSM-IV criteria.
- The sensitivity of the Korean CAM-ICU was 89.80% for nurse 1 and 77.40% for nurse 2.
- The overall accuracy of the evaluations was 83.33% for nurse 1 and 88.37% for nurse 2.
- The interrater reliability between the two nurses was reasonable with a kappa of 0.81.
Takeaway
This study created a Korean version of a tool to help doctors find confusion in ICU patients, which is important for their care.
Methodology
The CAM-ICU was translated and validated by having two nurses assess delirium in ICU patients and comparing their results with a psychiatrist's evaluation.
Potential Biases
Potential bias due to the inability to interview patients' families for baseline mental status.
Limitations
The study lacked detailed information on excluded patients and relied on medical records for baseline mental status, which may affect results.
Participant Demographics
63.6% male, median age 68 years (range: 19-87), with common causes of ICU admission including ARDS.
