Hypothesis
Does soluble egg antigen (SEA) of Schistosoma haematobium influence HCV replication in PBMC from patients with chronic HCV infection?
Conclusion
The study provides evidence that SEA stimulates HCV replication in PBMC, which may explain higher morbidity in patients co-infected with schistosomiasis and HCV.
Supporting Evidence
- 69.2% of patients showed increased HCV replication after SEA stimulation.
- Cell proliferation increased significantly from 3.2% to 16.7% with SEA.
- SEA treatment resulted in a 4.26-fold increase in PBMC count.
Takeaway
This study found that a substance from a parasite can make a virus grow more in the blood cells of sick people, which might make them even sicker.
Methodology
PBMC from 26 patients were cultured with and without SEA, and HCV RNA levels were measured before and after stimulation.
Limitations
The study was conducted in vitro, and results may not fully represent in vivo conditions.
Participant Demographics
Patients were 26 individuals with chronic HCV infection, predominantly genotype 4.
