Hypothesis
This study aimed to assess the presence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in mosquitoes and identify the circulating viral lineage in eastern Croatia.
Conclusion
The study confirmed the first detection of West Nile Virus lineage 2 in Culex pipiens mosquitoes in Croatia, indicating a potential risk for human infections.
Supporting Evidence
- 385 mosquito pools were tested for the presence of WNV.
- Positive samples were found in Culex pipiens mosquitoes.
- Phylogenetic analysis suggests a Hungarian origin for the virus strain.
Takeaway
Scientists found a virus in mosquitoes in Croatia that can make people sick. This means we need to be careful and watch for more cases.
Methodology
Mosquito traps were set up in rural and urban areas, and collected specimens were tested for Flaviviruses using PCR methods.
Limitations
The study did not identify the virus in some samples, and the reasons for previous non-detection in mosquitoes remain unclear.
