Hypothesis

The study aims to determine the diagnostic accuracy and feasibility of sentinel lymph node detection using a gamma probe in patients with Figo IB cervical cancer.

Conclusion

The identification of sentinel nodes in cervical cancer is feasible with preoperatively administered technetium99m-labelled nanocolloid.

Supporting Evidence

  • Scintigraphy showed focal uptake in 13 of the 14 patients.
  • Intraoperatively, 26 sentinel nodes were detected by gamma probe.
  • Histologically positive sentinel lymph nodes were found in only 1 patient.
  • No false-negative sentinel lymph nodes were found in the series.

Takeaway

Doctors can find important lymph nodes in women with cervical cancer using a special camera and a tiny amount of medicine before surgery.

Methodology

Patients received an injection of technetium99m-labelled nanocolloid, and sentinel nodes were identified using a gamma probe during surgery.

Limitations

A larger series will be required to establish sentinel node detection in cervical cancer for further therapy concepts and planning.

Participant Demographics

Patients with Figo IB cervical cancer planned for radical hysterectomy.
