Hypothesis
Is there a presence of Helicobacter pylori in neoplasms of the colon?
Conclusion
The presence of H. pylori in colon polyps did not yield any correlation with polyp size, colonic localization, or histopathologic type.
Supporting Evidence
- 11 (21.6%) of the polyps were determined to be H. pylori positive.
- The prevalence of H. pylori was higher in villous type polyps (60%) compared to other histologic types.
- No significant correlation was determined between histologic types and prevalence of H. pylori.
Takeaway
This study looked for a germ called H. pylori in colon growths and found it in some, but it didn't seem to matter where the growths were or how big they were.
Methodology
The study used immunohistochemical methods to test biopsy specimens from patients who had colon polyps.
Limitations
The study had a small sample size and did not establish a significant correlation between H. pylori presence and polyp characteristics.
