Hypothesis
What are the ocular variables, risk factors, and disease severity in newly diagnosed ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma?
Conclusion
Increased age is a risk factor for open-angle glaucoma, while smoking appears to decrease the risk compared to ocular hypertension.
Supporting Evidence
- 72.1% of subjects had open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and 27.9% had ocular hypertension (OH).
- 51.7% of OAG subjects had early disease at diagnosis.
- Smoking was associated with a lower risk of OAG compared to OH.
- Age was a significant risk factor for OAG.
- Mean intraocular pressure was higher in OH than in OAG.
- More OAG subjects had abnormal visual fields compared to OH subjects.
- Significant differences in demographic characteristics were observed between OAG and OH groups.
Takeaway
This study looked at people with high eye pressure and glaucoma to see what makes them different. They found that older people are more likely to have glaucoma, and surprisingly, smoking might lower the risk.
Methodology
A multicentre, prospective, noninterventional, cross-sectional study with complete history and examination of eligible subjects.
Potential Biases
Potential bias due to reliance on study site diagnosis and self-reported medical history.
Limitations
Self-reported risk factors may be unreliable, and there may be selection bias in the diagnosis of OAG and OH.
Participant Demographics
The majority of participants were Caucasian, with a mean age of 63.0 years for OAG and 56.5 years for OH.
