Hypothesis
The study investigates the relationship between Bcl-2 protein expression and p27 and p53 protein expressions as well as MIB-1 counts in breast cancer.
Conclusion
Bcl-2 protein expression is closely correlated with p27 and p53 protein expressions and the proliferation activity in invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast.
Supporting Evidence
- A decreased Bcl-2 protein expression was significantly correlated with a nuclear grade of III.
- A univariate analysis indicated a decreased Bcl-2 protein expression to be significantly associated with a worse disease-free survival.
- The incidence of a nuclear grade of III and positive MIB-1 counts increased with the number of abnormal findings in Bcl-2, p27, and p53 protein expressions.
Takeaway
This study found that lower levels of a protein called Bcl-2 in breast cancer are linked to other proteins and how fast the cancer cells are growing.
Methodology
The study evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of Bcl-2 protein in 249 invasive ductal carcinomas of the breast.
Limitations
The study did not obtain informed consent for older samples and excluded non-invasive carcinoma types.
Participant Demographics
Patients were 249 consecutive women aged 23 to 86 years, with a mean age of 58.1 years.
