Hypothesis
We aim to compare the band percentage and immature granulocyte percentage to set the threshold for immature granulocyte percentage equal to the sensitivity of > 10% band count.
Conclusion
Immature granulocyte percentage does not correlate with band percentage in the setting of possible infection.
Supporting Evidence
- Immature granulocyte percentage does not correlate with band percentage.
- Thirty-day mortality was observed in 163 patients (11.9%).
- Patients who died within 30 days had elevated immature granulocytes relative to those who survived.
Takeaway
This study looked at two types of blood tests to see if they could help doctors find infections. It found that one test didn't really match up with the other.
Methodology
A retrospective chart review was conducted at a single academic medical center analyzing data from patients with SIRS criteria and measured immature granulocyte and band percentages.
Potential Biases
Potential for bias due to the retrospective nature of the study and the exclusion of patients who received antibiotics before data collection.
Limitations
The study is limited to a single center and is retrospective, which may affect the generalizability of the findings.
Participant Demographics
Of 1369 patients, 763 were male (55.7%) with an average age of 55.9 years.
