Hypothesis
The study hypothesized a differential effect of short and long drug light intervals (DLI) of hypericin-PDT on the expression of angiogenic factors.
Conclusion
Long DLI hypericin-PDT induces upregulation of angiogenic proteins, while short DLI primarily targets tumor vasculature.
Supporting Evidence
- Short DLI PDT showed extensive vascular damage at 24 h.
- Long DLI PDT resulted in greater expression of angiogenic proteins.
- Gene expression profiling indicated downregulation of adhesion molecules at 24 h post treatment.
Takeaway
This study looked at how different timing in light treatment affects cancer cells and blood vessel growth. It found that longer treatment times can help grow new blood vessels that feed tumors.
Methodology
The study used a human bladder carcinoma xenograft model to assess the effects of hypericin-mediated photodynamic therapy at different drug light intervals.
Participant Demographics
Male balb/c nude mice, 6–8 weeks of age.
