Hypothesis

The study investigates the correlation of immunohistochemical markers of neuroendocrine differentiation with disease progression in prostate cancer.

Conclusion

CgA is a better predictor of disease at presentation compared to other markers, and both CgA and NSE show increasing expression with worsening histological grade.

Supporting Evidence

  • CgA was detected in 33 cases, Syn in 8 cases, and NSE in 44 cases.
  • Expression of CgA was seen in 7% of organ confined disease, 37% in locally invasive, and 35% in metastatic patients.
  • Both CgA and NSE had increasing expression with worsening Gleason grade.

Takeaway

This study looked at how certain markers in prostate cancer can help doctors understand how serious the disease is. They found that one marker, CgA, is especially helpful.

Methodology

The study evaluated malignant prostatic specimens from 84 patients using immunohistochemical staining for neuroendocrine markers.

Limitations

The study had a small sample size and was retrospective in nature.

Participant Demographics

Patients were aged between 52 and 93 years, with a mean age of 70 ± 9.2 years.

Statistical Information

P-Value

p 0.024 for CgA, p 0.006 for NSE

Statistical Significance
