Hypothesis
The study aims to determine the prevalence of echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) using various published cut-off values in hypertensive subjects in Nigeria.
Conclusion
The prevalence of LVH in hypertensive patients is strongly dependent on the cut-off value used to define it.
Supporting Evidence
- The prevalence of LVH ranged between 30.9% and 56.0%.
- Abnormal LV geometry was present in 61.1% to 74.0% of subjects.
- Eccentric LV geometry was the most common abnormal geometry observed.
Takeaway
This study found that many people with high blood pressure in Nigeria have thickened heart walls, and how we measure this can change the results.
Methodology
Echocardiography was performed on 480 hypertensive subjects over a two-year period, with complete data obtained for 457 subjects.
Potential Biases
The subjects were unselected in terms of treatment status, which may introduce bias.
Limitations
The study was conducted at a single center and included both treated and untreated hypertensive subjects.
Participant Demographics
The study included 457 hypertensive subjects, with 51.4% men and 48.6% women.
