Hypothesis
How does the genome and transcript structure of Edhazardia aedis compare to other microsporidia?
Conclusion
The transcriptome of Edhazardia aedis is surprisingly similar to that of Antonospora locustae despite their differences in genome size and life cycles.
Supporting Evidence
- E. aedis has a genome estimated to be much larger than that of E. cuniculi.
- Transcripts from E. aedis show a high similarity to those of A. locustae.
- Approximately a quarter of the transcripts analyzed coded for Hsp70.
Takeaway
This study looks at a tiny parasite that lives inside mosquitoes and finds that its genes are surprisingly similar to those of another parasite, even though they are quite different in size and how they live.
Methodology
An EST survey was conducted by sequencing over 1300 transcripts from Edhazardia aedis.
Limitations
The study is limited by the inability to culture E. aedis easily, which restricted RNA availability.
