Hypothesis
To evaluate early response of retinal sensitivity and retinal morphology in diabetic macular edema patients after intravitreal anti-VEGF treatment.
Conclusion
Microperimetry can be a useful tool in predicting the functional outcome and determining the efficacy of anti-VEGF treatment for diabetic macular edema patients.
Supporting Evidence
- Retinal sensitivity improved significantly from 7.94 dB before treatment to 14.22 dB one month after treatment.
- Central macular thickness decreased significantly from 449.33 μm before treatment to 357.93 μm one month after treatment.
- There was a significant negative correlation between central macular thickness and retinal sensitivity.
Takeaway
This study shows that a treatment for eye swelling in diabetes can help improve vision and the health of the eye.
Methodology
This was a prospective study involving 16 eyes of 12 patients with diabetic macular edema, using microperimetry and OCT to assess retinal sensitivity and morphology before and after anti-VEGF treatment.
Limitations
The study only included a limited number of patients and evaluated the response up to one month after the first dose of anti-VEGF.
Participant Demographics
12 patients (5 men and 7 women) aged 52-69 years, all with type 2 diabetes.
