Hypothesis
The study aims to investigate the immunohistochemical staining pattern of BAG-1 protein in patients with colorectal cancer and its association with clinicopathological factors and patient survival.
Conclusion
Nuclear BAG-1 expression is a useful predictive factor for distant metastasis and indicates a poor prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer.
Supporting Evidence
- 21 colorectal carcinomas (24.4%) exhibited a nuclear staining pattern.
- 56 (65.1%) exhibited cytoplasmic staining.
- Nuclear BAG-1 positivity was significantly higher in distant metastasis-positive cases (55.6%) than in negative cases (20.8%).
- Overall survival was significantly shorter for patients with tumours exhibiting BAG-1 positive nuclei compared to those with absent nuclear BAG-1-staining.
- Nuclear BAG-1 expression was the only independent prognostic variable for mortality.
Takeaway
This study found that a protein called BAG-1 in the nucleus of cancer cells can help predict how aggressive the cancer is and how well patients might do.
Methodology
The study involved immunohistochemical staining of tumor samples from 86 patients with colorectal cancer to assess BAG-1 expression and its correlation with various clinical factors.
