Hypothesis

The study evaluates the distribution of the antigen recognised by mAb 5T4 in normal and neoplastic tissues by immunohistochemistry.

Conclusion

The 5T4 antibody may be useful in diagnostic or targeting studies due to its expression in a wide range of carcinomas and restricted normal tissue distribution.

Supporting Evidence

  • 76 out of 115 neoplasms examined showed reactions with tumour cells.
  • Most normal or non-neoplastic tissues were negative for 5T4 antigen.
  • 5T4 antigen was strongly positive in syncytiotrophoblast of term placenta.

Takeaway

Researchers looked at a special protein called 5T4 in different body tissues to see where it shows up, especially in cancer. They found it mostly in cancer cells but not in many normal tissues.

Methodology

The study used immunohistochemistry on cryostat sections of various neoplastic and non-neoplastic tissues to assess the expression of the 5T4 antigen.

Limitations

The study did not assess the expression of 5T4 in all possible tissue types and relied on a limited sample of neoplasms.
