Hypothesis
The study aims to evaluate the differences in protein expression of E-cadherin and N-cadherin between basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and their relation to cancer aggressiveness.
Conclusion
The study found that N-cadherin expression is significantly higher in SCC compared to BCC, suggesting it may contribute to the more aggressive nature of SCC.
Supporting Evidence
- A significantly higher expression of N-cadherin was observed in SCC compared to BCC.
- 14% of SCC cases had more than 50% expression of N-cadherin.
- High expression of E-cadherin was preserved in both SCC and BCC.
Takeaway
This study looked at two types of skin cancer and found that one type has more of a certain protein that might make it more aggressive.
Methodology
The study analyzed 123 tumor paraffin specimens from patients, assessing the expression of E-cadherin and N-cadherin using immunohistochemical staining.
Limitations
The study did not examine the expression of factors regulating cadherin switch and lacked data on genetic findings.
