Hypothesis
Different Prakriti may have different drug metabolism rates associated with drug metabolizing enzyme (DME) polymorphism.
Conclusion
The study found significant associations between CYP2C19 genotypes and Ayurvedic Prakriti types, suggesting metabolic variability based on genetic factors.
Supporting Evidence
- The extensive metabolizer (EM) genotype was predominant in Pitta Prakriti (91%).
- Poor metabolizer (PM) genotype was highest in Kapha Prakriti (31%).
- Genotype specific for EM group was present only in Pitta Prakriti.
- Genotype typical for PM group was significant in Kapha Prakriti with an odds ratio of 3.5.
Takeaway
This study shows that people with different Ayurvedic body types may process drugs differently because of their genes.
Methodology
CYP2C19 genotyping was performed on 132 healthy subjects using PCR-RFLP technique.
Limitations
The small sample size limits the generalizability of the findings.
Participant Demographics
The study included 132 unrelated healthy subjects (62 males and 70 females) from the Maharashtrian population.
