Hypothesis

Chronic hemodialysis patients are at higher risk for acquiring hepatitis C virus (HCV) and the study aims to analyze the follow-up of newly acquired acute hepatitis C cases.

Conclusion

The measures taken significantly contributed to restraining the appearance of new cases of acute hepatitis C in the hemodialysis center.

Supporting Evidence

  • 32 new cases of acute hepatitis C were identified during the study period.
  • Blood screening showed variable ALT levels preceding anti-HCV seroconversion.
  • Ten out of 32 patients received treatment with pegylated interferon for 24 weeks.

Takeaway

Patients on dialysis can get hepatitis C, and by checking their blood regularly and following strict cleaning rules, we can help stop new infections.

Methodology

Patients were tested monthly for anti-HCV and ALT levels, with positive results confirmed by HCV RNA testing.

Limitations

The study was limited to a single hemodialysis unit and may not be generalizable to other settings.

Participant Demographics

Chronic hemodialysis patients in a single center in Pato Branco, Brazil.
