Hypothesis
The study aimed to investigate the expression of human β-defensins in basal cell carcinoma (BCC).
Conclusion
The gene expression patterns of hBD-1 and hBD-2 are significantly altered in non-ulcerated BCCs compared to controls.
Supporting Evidence
- hBD-1 levels were significantly higher in healthy controls than in BCC tissue.
- BCCs showed significantly increased mRNA expression of hBD-2 compared to controls.
- No significant difference was found for hBD-3 levels between BCCs and controls.
Takeaway
This study looked at how certain proteins in the skin, called β-defensins, behave in a common type of skin cancer. They found that some of these proteins are not working as they should in the cancer.
Methodology
Twenty-two non-ulcerated BCCs were analyzed for hBD (1–3) mRNA using quantitative real-time RT-PCR, with controls from healthy subjects.
Potential Biases
The study did not control for age and gender in healthy subjects, which may influence AMP expression.
Limitations
The study did not include functional or immunohistological studies to confirm the presence and localization of differentially expressed genes.
Participant Demographics
28 patients (16 men and 12 women; median age: 79.4 years) with BCC and 27 healthy controls (12 men and 15 women; median age: 62.3 years).
