Hypothesis

MT-1E mRNA expression differs between oestrogen receptor-positive and oestrogen receptor-negative breast cancer tissues.

Conclusion

MT-1E mRNA is significantly more expressed in oestrogen receptor-negative breast cancer tissues compared to oestrogen receptor-positive tissues.

Supporting Evidence

  • MT-1E mRNA expression was significantly higher in oestrogen receptor-negative breast cancer tissues.
  • MCF7 cells, which are oestrogen receptor-positive, did not express MT-1E mRNA.
  • Both oestrogen receptor-negative and progesterone receptor-negative MDA-MB-231 cells showed high levels of MT-1E mRNA.

Takeaway

This study found that a specific protein, Metallothionein 1E, is found in higher amounts in a type of breast cancer that doesn't respond to certain hormones.

Methodology

Semi-quantitative RT-PCR was used to evaluate MT-1E mRNA expression in breast cancer tissues and cell lines.
