Hypothesis

Does the I1307K APC polymorphism affect the clinicopathological features and prognosis of breast cancer?

Conclusion

The I1307K polymorphism does not appear to be associated with any specific features of breast cancer or affect prognosis.

Supporting Evidence

  • Twenty-four of 209 cases (11.5%) were found to carry the I1307K polymorphism.
  • No association was observed between the polymorphism and age at diagnosis, grade, tumour size, lymph node status, oestrogen receptor status, or P53 immunoreactivity.
  • The 5-year survival for women with the I1307K polymorphism was 88.9% compared to 81.6% for those without.

Takeaway

This study looked at a gene change in women with breast cancer and found it doesn't really change how the cancer behaves or how well people do.

Methodology

Genotyping of paraffin-embedded breast cancers and analysis of clinicopathological correlations.

Limitations

The study only included Ashkenazi Jewish women diagnosed below the age of 65.

Participant Demographics

Ashkenazi Jewish women diagnosed with breast cancer below the age of 65.
