Hypothesis
This study investigates the effect of essential oil (EO)-based preparations on biofilm adhesion to orthodontic archwires.
Conclusion
Stainless steel with epoxy coating or TMA archwires, combined with a ternary mixture of essential oils, are recommended for optimal antibacterial protection against biofilm formation.
Supporting Evidence
- Stainless steel-based archwires showed the highest efficacy against S. mutans.
- Titanium-molybdenum alloy archwires demonstrated inhibition against S. aureus.
- CuNiTi alloys were ineffective in preventing biofilm development.
- The ternary emulsion was most effective for four out of five archwires tested.
Takeaway
This study shows that using certain essential oils can help keep braces clean by stopping germs from sticking to them.
Methodology
The study tested five types of orthodontic archwires with essential oil emulsions for their ability to prevent biofilm formation.
Limitations
The study did not assess long-term effects of essential oils on biofilm formation in real-world orthodontic settings.
