Hypothesis

To evaluate the toxicity and efficacy of combination chemotherapy with paclitaxel, cisplatin and 24 h continuous infusion of 5-FU/folinic acid in patients with unresectable, locally advanced or metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma.

Conclusion

The combination of paclitaxel, cisplatin, and continuously infused 5-FU/folinic acid is a highly active treatment for advanced gastric cancer.

Supporting Evidence

  • Five patients (11%) achieved a complete response.
  • Eighteen patients (40%) achieved a partial response.
  • The overall response rate was 51%.
  • The median progression-free survival time was 9 months.
  • The median overall survival time was 14 months.

Takeaway

This study tested a new combination of cancer drugs on patients with advanced stomach cancer and found it worked well for many of them.

Methodology

Patients received a combination of paclitaxel, cisplatin, and 5-FU/folinic acid over several cycles, with assessments for response, survival, and toxicity.

Limitations

The study had a small sample size and was limited to patients who were chemotherapy-naive.

Participant Demographics

Forty-five chemotherapy-naive patients, 28 male and 17 female, with a median age of 60 years.
