Hypothesis

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of concurrent chemoradiotherapy with carboplatin followed by carboplatin and 5-fluorouracil in patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Conclusion

The study found that concurrent chemoradiotherapy with carboplatin followed by carboplatin and 5-fluorouracil is an effective treatment option for locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, showing good overall response and survival rates.

Supporting Evidence

  • 100% of patients achieved an objective response rate of the primary tumor.
  • The 3-year overall survival rate was 89.7%.
  • The 3-year progression-free survival rate was 72.7%.
  • Weight loss and mucositis were the most common acute toxicities.

Takeaway

Doctors used a special treatment with two types of medicine and radiation to help people with a throat cancer called nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and it worked really well for most of them.

Methodology

A prospective study involving 50 patients who received radiation therapy and concurrent chemotherapy with carboplatin, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy with carboplatin and 5-fluorouracil.

Limitations

The study was limited to a single institution and had a relatively small sample size.
