Case Report of Pulmonary Embolism in a Patient on Recombinant Activated Protein C
Author Information

Hypothesis
Does recombinant human activated protein C (rhAPC) provide protection against DVT/PE in critically ill patients?
Conclusion
The administration of rhAPC alone may not be sufficient DVT/PE prophylaxis in high risk patients.
Supporting Evidence
- This is the first known case report of a radiographically documented PE occurring in a patient receiving continuous infusion of rhAPC.
- The risks associated with concomitant anticoagulation and rhAPC therapy are unknown.
- Further research is necessary to determine the safest and most effective regimen for DVT/PE prophylaxis in patients receiving rhAPC.
Takeaway
This study talks about a patient who got a blood clot in the lungs while receiving a treatment that was supposed to help prevent it, suggesting that the treatment alone might not be enough.
Methodology
Case report.
Limitations
This is a single case report, limiting the generalizability of the findings.
Participant Demographics
A 48-year-old male with a history of hypertension, schizophrenia, hypothyroidism, and factor XII deficiency.
