Hypothesis

The study aims to determine the incidence of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) or abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) in ICU patients with two or more risk factors.

Conclusion

Patients with intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome have a high mortality rate and long hospital stays.

Supporting Evidence

  • 62% of patients monitored had at least one episode of intra-abdominal hypertension.
  • 12.5% of patients developed abdominal compartment syndrome.
  • The average hospital stay was 60 days, and the average ICU stay was 14 days.
  • 28-day mortality was 31%, ICU mortality was 38%, and hospital mortality was 62%.

Takeaway

This study found that many patients in the ICU have serious belly problems that can make them very sick and stay in the hospital a long time.

Methodology

Patients admitted to the ICU were monitored for intra-abdominal pressure if they had at least two risk factors, with data collected daily for up to 7 days.

Participant Demographics

Mean age 66 years, 34% female, with various medical and surgical backgrounds.
