Hypothesis
Renalase levels are altered in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients and may be sensitive to modulation by tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI).
Conclusion
Renalase plasma levels are significantly decreased in treatment-naive CML patients compared to those on TKI treatment and healthy controls.
Supporting Evidence
- Renalase concentration was markedly decreased in treatment-naive CML patients compared to other groups.
- Lower levels in the TKI group were not statistically significant compared to controls.
- RNLS levels correlated negatively with total leukocyte and neutrophil counts.
Takeaway
This study found that patients with a type of blood cancer called CML have lower levels of a protein called renalase, especially if they haven't started treatment yet.
Methodology
A prospective cross-sectional case-control study comparing renalase levels in 75 CML patients and 20 healthy controls using ELISA.
Limitations
The study is single-center with a relatively small sample size and does not include in vitro or in vivo experiments.
Participant Demographics
Mean age of patients was 58.3 years, with 46.7% males and 53.3% females.
