Hypothesis
The study aims to investigate the slow pyrolysis of softwood carbohydrates, specifically cellulose and galactoglucomannan, in a fluidized bed reactor.
Conclusion
Different raw materials produced significantly different bio-oils, with cellulose yielding mainly levoglucosan and GGM yielding primarily acetic acid.
Supporting Evidence
- Levoglucosan was the dominant product in the cellulose pyrolysis oil.
- Acetic acid was found in the highest concentrations in both the galactoglucomannan and pine wood pyrolysis oils.
- The release of non-condensable gases from galactoglucomannan started at lower temperatures than for cellulose.
Takeaway
This study looks at how heating wood and its components can create different types of oils, which can be used for fuel.
Methodology
Pyrolysis was conducted in a batch mode fluidized bed reactor with temperature ramping until 460 °C, followed by analysis of the produced bio-oil.
Limitations
The mass balance could not be closed with the current reactor set-up, leading to unreliable condensation of vapours.
