Hypothesis

Do tumor size, tumor grade, and Ki-67 index predict the malignant behavior of gastrointestinal and pancreatic endocrine tumors?

Conclusion

Tumor size, tumor grade, and Ki-67 index do not accurately predict the malignant behavior of gastrointestinal and pancreatic endocrine tumors.

Supporting Evidence

  • 68.18% of surgically staged neoplasms presented with metastases.
  • 66.66% of metastatic tumors showed less than 2% Ki-67 immunoreactivity.
  • Unexpectedly high association with metastasis was found in small, low-grade tumors.

Takeaway

This study found that the size and grade of certain tumors don't help us know if they will spread or not, which is surprising.

Methodology

The study analyzed biopsies and surgical specimens from 38 patients, evaluating tumor size, grade, and Ki-67 index.

Limitations

The study's findings may not apply to all types of endocrine tumors, and the sample size is relatively small.

Participant Demographics

16 males and 22 females, mean age 62.6 years, range 24–91.
